The mood of the class was momentarily silent due to the loud blow. Charlotte's face flushed red and she immediately apologized to everyone. He accidentally hit the table too hard. I smiled seeing her reaction. “Jealous, Charlotte?” godaku after friends refocus on their respective affairs.
“We'd better stop talking about that loser. He doesn't deserve our attention.” Charlotte bit the bread and chewed it quickly.
“You discussed him, not me. Anyway—” My sentence was cut off because Charlotte raised my hand holding bread to my mouth. I'm laughing a little.
“I told you to stop. You're my friend or him, anyway?” charlotte was upset.
I gobbled up my bread and no longer talked about Wyatt. We agreed not to discuss the lesson either. Even though the friends sitting around us were busy arguing about one of the topics we were confident about getting into on the exam, we were not interested in doing the same.
Arriving early to the exam room did not help much. The closer the exam starts, the more nervous I get. My heart was pounding, my palms were cold, and my brain stopped thinking. Everything I've learned so far seems to vanish from my head. Brother Hadi is right. Come sooner or on time, the level of nervousness is the same.
“Again, Dira!” the new Jordan came. He put his bag on his seat, then came near me. “The advice you gave me is so powerful! Thank you, Dira. I can study exam questions well and I am ready to take the exam today.”
I looked at Charlotte before looking back at the young man. “Same-sama, Jordan. But that's a tip that is also done by our other friends.”
“You always go low. Although all our friends know how to learn it, but only you are kind enough to tell me how,” he said with a happy face. In order to avoid any unimportant debate, I decided to just agree with what he said.
“Mm, Dira. Can we talk to you for a minute?” ask her with a more serious facial expression.
“We are talking. What do you want to talk about?” many confused.
He looked around us. “Not here. Both only.”
“Jordan, exams are about to start. We can do that later if you want to talk to me alone. I don't want to be late for the exam.” I glanced at my watch.
He frowned. “Shortly. The exam will start in ten minutes, I only ask for one minute. This is a very important thing for me and you, Dira.”
I frowned hearing that sentence. “Nothing is more important to me right now than passing the exam.”
“What's up, Dira? Does Jordan make you feel uncomfortable?” ask Wyatt to mediate with us. He stood up while putting his hand on the back of my chair. His height far exceeded Jordan's, but the young man did not feel intimidated.
I rolled my eyeballs hearing the question. “Nothing, Wyatt. Jordan just invited me to talk, but later after the exam was over.”
Jordan opened his mouth wanting to say something, but someone knocked on the open door of the classroom, attracting the attention of all the students. “Good morning, kids!” Our debate finally had to be postponed because the examination supervisor had already come.
I used that opportunity to take out my writing equipment, as well as disable my phone. But reading the name of the sender of one of the incoming messages, I rushed to open and read the message.
Good exam, beautiful. You definitely can. I'm waiting for you at our college. Our campus? Since when did the college belong to him? Basic male hobby delusions. I prepared to delete the message, but I canceled it and immediately turned off my phone.
My fast heartbeats slowly beat regularly as I read and answered matter after matter carefully. The question is not far from the example of the questions we have learned together in the tutoring and taught by the teacher. I just need to carefully read the sentence on the problem so as not to get stuck while choosing the correct answer from the four options.
Keeping my promise, after the first day of the exam, I gave Jordan time to talk alone with me. He asked me to talk outside the classroom, but I refused. We could talk in class when the supervisor and friends came out of the room.
“I ... You have long received a letter from me.” Oh, naw. He's not seriously going to discuss the love letter he once gave, ‘kan? “I need your answer.” Oh, goddamn. He was talking about the letter again. He looked down and looked at the floor. “You already know that I like you and we are very close the last few weeks. My feelings for you are deepening, Dira.”
“Jordan,” I said trying to cut.
“I haven't finished talking,” he said slowly. I closed my mouth and waited until he finished talking. “After the exams are over, we won't meet every day at school, so, I think this is a good opportunity to express my feelings again and hear your answer.”
“We will study at the same faculty if we are lucky at the time of the entrance exam later, so we do not need to undergo a long distance relationship. I won't mind your work as a model, nor will I demand that you give me time. We can discuss how we divide our time so that our work, college, and relationships are not disrupted.” He grabbed both of my hands in his grasp. “What do you think? You want to be my girlfriend?”
I pulled my hand slowly from his grip. “I'm sorry, Jordan. I just think of you as a friend. I have absolutely no special feelings for you.”
“I understand. You have just separated from the relationship that has been established for dozens of years, it must be difficult for you to start a relationship again. But give me a chance, Dira. I can prove to you that I'm better than your ex or any other man. I will make you happy every day,” he said trying to convince me.
“This has nothing to do with my ex. I'm grateful for your feelings for me, Jordan. But I told you before, I just want to be friends with you. Not more. I appreciate your honesty, and I'm sorry, I can't be your girlfriend,” I said carefully so as not to hurt her heart.
“Why? Is it because I am a native Indonesian? You prefer bule men?” his question began to increase the intonation of his voice.
I frowned at me. “What do you mean? I told you we were just friends. It has nothing to do with you being Indonesian or bule. Please, don't bring Colin into this conversation. I appreciate your feelings, I beg you also appreciate my answer.”
Even if Colin and I don't have a relationship anymore, I won't let anyone talk bad about him. Especially those who never knew him personally. Colin is a good guy, just a little stupid and naive. Because if she was a bad person, I couldn't possibly survive being in a relationship with her for a dozen years.
“Oke, I'm sorry. I do not intend to impose my will on you. I'm sorry.” He took a step back. “Do you want to reconsider being my girlfriend? Whatever time you need to think about it, I will wait.”
I really don't understand. He was a shy kid with glasses being his trademark. Then he suddenly turned into an attractive and confident young man by changing his hairstyle, dressing style, and removing his glasses. The princess students who had not noticed him before, now began to approach him.
With all the attention he got, why would he still focus on his feelings for me? This is not the first time he has signaled that he loves me. And this is also not the first time I have stated unequivocally that we are just friends. He didn't mind that, then why did he now seem to want to have more relationship with me?
“Buddy, have a little price,” said Wyatt from the open class window. “That girl said no, and she just wants to be friends with you. Why are you forcing her to rethink being your boyfriend? He could not want to be friends anymore because he was disgusted with you.”
“You must learn east manners, Wyatt. Eavesdropping is only done by people who do not know ethics. Did the American never teach his son manners?” syndical Jordan.
“Don't bring my parents. If you want to insult me, insult me enough. My parents are too honorable to be called by your filthy mouth,” exclaimed Wyatt angrily.
“Go, Wyatt. Dira and I were talking about something serious,” kicked Jordan out.
“We're done talking, Jordan.” I put my bag on my shoulder. “I'm sure my driver has been waiting a long time. Anyway we still need to study for the exam tomorrow.”
“But, Dira,” says Jordan half begged. “We haven't finished talking.”
“You're done talking.” Charlotte opened the door and extended her hand to me. “Come, Dira. I'm already hungry.”
“I told you, we're not done talking!” My steps came to a halt when a hand held tightly to my arm and twisted my body to stand face to face.
