What Dira said made a lot of sense. I forget that the world we live in is not a world filled with people who help others. I was no longer in an educational environment and a home where people were kind to us. I was at an audition held by a large company that risked her good name through a model they chose as an ambassador. The person who will be their representative.
The sentence of Dira at once made me aware of the reason Hadi chose me to be his assistant, his confidant, his right hand. He must have known what kind of company they have and how the people who are in it. The competition between them wasn't always healthy, I knew it was from Mama. Hadi must have chosen me, because I was the only one he could trust.
“Wow. Hadi thought that far?” mama said as I accompanied her to prepare dinner by sitting on a chair near the kitchen counter. “The age is young. All I know is, she will continue her studies before working full-time at the company. But Hadi is a child who is always calculating. He's correct. You need to prepare yourself as early as possible.”
“So, when can I start studying, Ma?” I'm just impatient.
Mama laughed a little. “Colin, the first thing you have to do is complete your studies. You pass the selection for a new employee at Mr. Mahendra's company, then I will teach you everything I know. Not before you become our employee,” said Mama while smiling meaningfully.
“Lo? Why is that, Ma? Hadi pointed at me himself. Why do I have to go in there through the selection line?” I was confused and objected. It's not that I don't believe I can get through all of that process. But I think Hadi will help me in.
“So just enter through selection, your period is given special treatment? After all, you have never interned at Pak Mahendra's company. He violated the rules he made himself when he accepted you without selection.” Mama shook her head. “Which I will teach you should only be heard by company employees. Do you think I would just give info about the company to a stranger?”
“I'm Mama's son, not a stranger who will betray Mama or my own good friend,” I said defend myself.
“That doesn't happen in the world of work, son. You asked me to teach you to be an assistant in Mr. Mahendra's company. Well, everything I have here is paid and trained by my own boss,” Mama said pointing her head.
Mama's right. Even though I am his son, he cannot reveal the secrets of the company to me. “Good. I will prove I can enter the Uncle company through the selection line,”, I said accepting the challenge.
“Solve your lecture first,” said Mama reminded. I did it while kissing her temple. He laughed happily.
After breakfast together, we prepared to go to Grandpa and Grandma's house. They have protested because we have not come to see them for a long time. We picked up Dira, then headed for their house. Grandma whines to meet my boyfriend, so I give it to her.
Grandma welcomed us with pleasure, especially Dira. He immediately took his hand to the kitchen. I don't know what they're doing there. But not long after, Grandma came with Dira with a small basket filled with chrysanthemums. I pouted to see the basket Dira brought was his croisan, while the one Grandma held for us to share.
“This is not fair,” my protest after my share of the croissants run out. “We are Grandmother's grandchildren, but the most croissants were given to Dira.”
“He is my son-in-law's future granddaughter. So, I have to treat him well.” Grandma looked towards Dira. “Is Colin being nice to you? If he is troublesome, do not hesitate to report to me or his grandfather.”
“Colin is very good, Grandma,” replied Dira who glanced at me before smiling at Grandma.
“Good, then. We've seen the place your mama ordered. The decoration is very good, we were confused to choose which of all the options.” Grandma kept talking about my wedding preparations and Dira.
We had lunch together, and Grandma and Mama continued to discuss other details for our wedding. I looked towards Dira. His face did not stop smiling. It seems that what they do and choose makes him happy. Thankfully, I want her to be satisfied with all the details of our marriage.
With my busy research and Dira working through college, getting our family involved in our wedding preparations was a wise decision. I'm not like a woman who has her own dream of a wedding day. Most importantly, we are legal to be husband and wife. That's enough. Therefore, Dira is the focus of our wedding details.
After driving Dira home, we continued our journey to our apartment. My mother was sad to be parting with me. Just-there's. Dira and I would live in the same apartment building as them, so we didn't really split up.
We chose the location in the apartment building because it was located between the Dira campus and the headquarters of Uncle Hendra company. So, she's not too far away from her campus and I don't have to leave too early to work. If I'm lucky enough to be accepted as their employee.
“A quick time passes, yes, dear,” Mama told Dad. “In a few months, Colin will finish his studies, then go on to work, and get married. I'm sure in the near future, Lily will also be out of this house after marrying her lover.”
“Ya!” mama looked up at Dad. “For that ...” Mama glanced at Lily. “I'm not sure I'm going to let my daughter marry an older man who already has children. I am also so.”
I looked at my mother in disbelief. She married Dad at a young age. Dad was married and owned me. All this time I thought Mama wouldn't mind if one of us followed in her footsteps. Married to a widow or widower. Turns out I was wrong. His statement was very strange to me. Maybe I'll be able to understand his thoughts when I have kids later.
“I have no intention of getting married young, Ma. It could be that I will follow in Mama's footsteps if I am not married also at the age of thirty.” Lily shrugged both of her shoulders casually.
“It won't happen. Once you finish college, I will take you to various events that we attend. So, you can meet a lot of men your age. Who knows if he is among them. Just like Colin, you will also marry young. Trust me,” said Mama.
“Why is that?” lily asked confusedly.
“Because I won't let you alone for too long,” seduce Mama. Dad laughed with her. “Again there are also many mothers who fight for you to be their daughter-in-law.”
“Iya. Because I'm a Caucasian, not because they know me.” Lily rolled her eyeballs.
“Charlotte was like that too. Do not want to marry young and a myriad of other reasons,” I said mediate. “Look at him now. Already engaged at the age of eighteen and will get married once she and Wyatt are done.”
“That's because Wyatt was chasing him nonstop. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. But we are not a wealthy family, which men would chase me like that?” lily said again.
Lily is the best blend of Dad and Mama. She has beautiful brown hair, green eyes, and a sharp nose that she inherited from Dad. Her oval-shaped face makes her look younger than her age with the thin lips she gets from Mama. Which man wouldn't be interested in her?
“Do not go low. That's not your nature.” I ruffled her hair. “Teen generally likes sweet women like you. What you need to change is your indifference. It makes men afraid to approach you.”
“Wow! Did I not hear wrong? My brother said I'm sweet? More from Dira?” goda. Well, this is his true nature. Not the lowly girl.
We went back to our rooms at bedtime. I immediately made a video call and chatted with Dira until she fell asleep. I ended the call and followed him into the dream world. I can't remember if I had a dream that night.
Dad and Mama were already sitting around the dining table when I went out for breakfast. They discussed their activities today, and agreed to have dinner alone. I complained to hear it slowly. They often had dinner together and let me and my sister eat without them. Not concerned, they laughed.
The doorbell rang, we were silent for a moment. I stood up and blocked Dad who was intending to check who came to visit. This Monday morning, who came without going through the security screening process? I frowned looking at the faces of people I didn't know through the peephole at the door.
“There can I help?” ask me after opening the door. Looking at their uniforms, I finally understood why the security officers had not given the warning beforehand.
“What's really Colin Andrew Lewis staying here?” ask the man standing in front of me.
“True. I myself,” answered me confusedly. Why did they come looking for me?
“What's up, Colin?” ask Dad who walked over to me.
Before I could answer, the man pointed an envelope at me. “We carry an arrest warrant on behalf of Mr. Colin. Please, come with us to the office without a fight.”
