Chapter 22 - Unsensitive

I was just coming down the stairs when two big dogs ran up to me. They didn't care that their bodies were heavy, they leaned their front legs against mine and tried to kiss me on the face. Since I was much taller compared to those standing on both of their hind legs, Black and Gold's face could only touch my chest.

“Good morning to you both. I don't have time to play today with you guys. I have to get to campus.” I laughed when they pushed me down to the stairs. They kissed me with enthusiasm.

“If you are not going to college, you will not play with them and prefer to go with Papa to the office.” Dira walked down the stairs past me. Black and Gold immediately approached him and raised their legs to his body.

“Wo, wo, wo.” Adi hugged Dira from behind, keeping her brother standing upright. “I told you, keep your attitude when greeting my brother. She is not as strong as me or Brother Hadi who can hold your aggressive embrace.”

“They won't understand.” Dira rolled his eyeballs, responding to Adi's ridiculous attitude.

The front door opened, our attention all directed towards the man standing in the doorway. “What are you doing there? Come, hurry. Time to exercise,” call Papa.

“That's the last time you have to buy a pizza!” I was so loud that it immediately shot to the front door. Adi followed by my side.

“Cheat! Should have counted first just run!” dira's protest heard from his voice, he was far behind us. I turned towards Adi as we arrived at the doorway, then clapped in the air. “I don't want to treat you to pizza. You cheats!”

“Let me give pocket money to treat your two brothers,” said Papa broke up. Me and Adi cheered happily. “Come, now we jog.”

Exercising every morning has become a habit Papa has been accustomed to since we were children. My sister and I loved our morning activities. Only Mama who sometimes looks not like having to wake up early to exercise.

Gold and Black ran fast in front of me, then they stopped and barked loudly, inviting me to follow their running pace. Who's afraid? I sped up my runs following them and left my family far behind me.

“Basic showman,” taunted Dira as I ran past her after successfully circling the house. I just laughed when I heard it. He must still be angry because he lost the race.

After taking a morning shower in each other's rooms and having breakfast together, I set off with my two sisters. Papa will leave a few minutes after we. Mama gives lunch boxes to Dira and Adi which they immediately refuse. We plan to have pizza later. Because Mama said that it contained a snack, they accepted it.

Morning traffic to school was not a pleasant experience for me, so I am very grateful to our parents who chose the nearest school from home. The distance from our home campus is not far. That's why the brothers would want to study at the same campus.

I asked the young man passing by to take him to the infirmary. Two people came closer, so we could share the burden. I was forced to support the upper body, then they guarded the middle body and legs.

There was no doctor or nurse on guard, so we handed him over to the lecturer who happened to pass by. We all had morning classes, so no one was willing to accompany her in the room, so the woman could not force us to stay.

“Then, who among you is his classmate?” ask the woman insisted. The three of us answered not quickly.

“Same, Mom. And I am also not in class with him,” said the second youth.

“Not only you guys have class. I also have to teach this morning.” He glanced at his watch. This lecturer is just looking for excuses. If he has to go to class, he can ask other lecturers to take care of the patient for a while until the health worker arrives. Why force students to do it?

“Hadi? Who among you is Hadi?” asked the lecturer to feel he had the upper hand.

“I,” I said quickly, want to get away from this place immediately. “I am a student at this campus, is keeping students sick my job? “No. Someone was acting strange this morning. He greeted me, then pretended to faint as I was heading towards our major.” I shook my head not believing this was happening to me.

“Valeria?” guess it exactly. I nodded slowly. He glanced in the direction where the health room was located. “Health officials haven't come this early, so how can you be free from that place? You let him in that room alone?”

“There is a lecturer guarding it. I'd rather leave him alone than he set me up and no eyewitness can prove me innocent.” I accelerated my footwork. Colin tried to align his steps with mine.

“I mean, you're worried that the incident when we were third grade SMU repeated again?” ask Colin.

“We don't have time to discuss this. We better get to class now.” It was not just the two young men who were going to meet their fierce lecturer this morning. Me either. I don't want to make a single mistake in my last two semesters at this college. It could have forced me to postpone my plans to finish one semester sooner than my other friends.

Valeria skipped one course, and then she showed up for the second. Colin was already sitting by my side, while the seats in front and behind me were already filled by the other students. He had no chance to sit next to me this time.

Unfortunately, I can't avoid him forever. When the second course was over, Valeria stood up from her seat and blocked my steps. Colin was by my side and stopped. The girl sighed softly, then put on a puffy face.

“This is a certificate from the doctor and the medicine he gave me. I was anemic because I fainted. Your attitude in the health room was painful. You act as if we don't know each other.” How dare he blame my attitude.

“Other times if you are sick, do not come to campus. You've troubled four people this morning.” I walked past him before my mood got worse. Me and my two brothers intend to enjoy this afternoon at a typical Italian restaurant.

Colin and I walked to the department office to learn about the development of our title proposal. The head of the department gave us good news and asked us to immediately work on the concept. We can give the concept of the proposal to the supervisor who appointed it.

We cheered when we were in the parking lot. One step has passed to graduation. Colin invited me to celebrate our success, but I was forced to refuse. I made a promise to my brothers first.

“Hadi.” A woman called my name. Before looking at the direction the voice came from, I knew who the voice belonged to. Colin's face paled immediately. “Can we talk to you for a minute?”
