Hadi carried the fainted Charlotte to his room. Only Dira, me, and my two grandmothers went to my sister's room. Hadi laid her on the bed, then Grandma immediately sat by her side. Charlotte opened her eyes as Grandma put the smells on her nose. We were all relieved to see he was fine.
Hadi and I went back to the living room and let the three of them take care of my sister. The fewer people he was with, the better, so that the room did not feel crowded. I couldn't hear him cry if he couldn't hold back his sadness any more.
Just now she was telling me about her feelings for Wyatt, their plans for the future, their promise to be together forever, the fact that took all of that from my sister on her happy day. Wyatt is outrageous.
“You all right?” ask Hadi when we got to the last step. I nodded, worried that if I made a sound, I would cry.
Our family and friends are gathered in the living room. It has been decided that Wyatt will join Grandpa and Grandma to return to America. The young man insisted on continuing his studies in Indonesia, but the parents refused. Since Wyatt had no one willing to be on his side, he ended up being silent.
The day that was supposed to bring laughter in this house, it ended in disaster. The engagement is canceled, Wyatt and Charlotte's relationship is over, and we still can't touch Finley. If only I could remember what happened to me when I was two years old. But there was no memory of anything other than that I did not like being around the man.
Charlotte slept alone in her room. I came to say good night and leave him alone. If he needs us, he will come to us. Tonight was the first night I couldn't sleep in my new room. Not because Charlotte wasn't sleeping with me, but because I was thinking of a way to get back at Finley.
I accompanied Grandpa to take Grandpa and Grandma to the airport. The parents were in one car, and I was in the other with Wyatt. We didn't talk all the way to the airport. Wyatt tried to open the conversation, but stopped talking after seeing that I didn't respond to a single word.
Grandma hugged me so tightly as if unwilling to part when they were about to enter the special terminal of international departure. He asked me to promise to always take care of myself and to obey whatever Grandpa and Grandma told me. Of course I answered yes. I don't want to be far from my own family either.
When we had dinner, Charlotte came out of her room and ate with us. Grandma and Grandpa exchanged glances, then Grandma invited him to talk about light things. I responded when they asked me my opinion.
Charlotte was still sleeping alone in her room, so I left her after saying good night. The state of the house was completely different without my sister's laugh. Let's hope this situation changes soon and Charlotte recovers from her heartbreak.
On Monday morning, Charlotte surprised us all by entering the dining room in a neat state. She wore her new school uniform, her brown hair ponytail, and her face slightly used makeup to disguise the circles around her eyes from crying too much.
“Darling, are you sure you're going to school in this situation?” ask Grandma with a worried tone. “Your grandfather has called the school to ask permission for one week. You rest at home. Yes?”
“I'll be late for the national exam, Grandma. This will be my first day of study, so I cannot waste a single day of being sad. I'll be fine. There's Dira at school. I'll be together all day,” Charlotte said trying to convince Grandma.
“How about you can't take it anymore and cry at school?” ask Grandma again.
“I promise if I can't continue studying, I'll go home.”
“It's okay, baby. Charlotte's gonna be fine. He's correct. There's Dira, so if there's anything, she's not alone in her school,” Grandpa said calming Grandma down.
Grandma finally gave up and let Charlotte go to school. Grandpa went with my sister to school, because Grandpa's office was closer than there. The driver drove me to my college. He didn't wait until I finished college, because Hadi was going to take me home.
It has been a week since I came to the campus with my latest appearance, the students still turned their heads as I passed them. What shirt and trousers can they recognize as a product of a particular brand? Or are they still curious about the bag I'm holding on my shoulder? This is a backpack I have been wearing since last week.
“Hai, Mila,” greet Manda who blocked my step towards our lecture hall. I intend to shift in order to get through it. “Ah, I mean, Clarissa.” I stopped hearing my name being called.
“There can I help?” ask me in a formal tone. I don't want to have any close friends because drama doesn't matter like this.
“I'm sorry. You're correct. From the very beginning of our college days, you never promised anything or gave us hope that we were close friends. I'm the one who took the initiative to approach you and tell you about my personal problems. I have no right to demand that you do the same.” He looked at his feet. “I won't do that again.”
“No need to apologize, Manda. I didn't put your words into my heart.” I glanced at my watch. “Lecture is about to begin, we'd better get into the room now.”
I don't understand why being friends with me seems to be such an important thing to him. Though he can be friends with others who would love to share his story with him. I'm not a good friend, so why keep pushing myself close to me?
At lunchtime, Hadi and Colin were already waiting downstairs. We were looking for a bench to sit and eat with. I deliberately left the room as soon as possible so that Manda would not come with us. I don't want him to listen to what we're going to talk about, if only Colin or Hadi would discuss something personal other than college.
After college, I went to the department office to submit the proposal I had done to my guidance lecturer. He asked me and the other students who also came to see him to put the proposal on his desk. We were all asked to come again two days later to discuss our proposal after he finished checking.
I felt uneasy as I walked towards the parking lot. I looked around me, no one was looking at me. A few other students walked towards the parking lot of my major. So, I'm the only one walking towards Hadi's major.
The two of them were chatting casually as I turned the corner of the corridor. Colin stood facing me, and Hadi turned his back on me. Seeing that, I put my index finger in front of my lips. Colin was not a good actor, but he managed to take his eyes off me before Hadi realized my arrival.
“Oh,” exclaimed Hadi as I closed his eyes with both of my hands from behind. “Rissa, you know that you cannot prank me, ‘kan?”
“How can you know?” my unaccepted protest was caught sooner than I expected. I lowered my hand and let him turn his body.
“I recognize your perfume. It is the only one of your appearance that you do not change.” He smiled triumphantly.
“Definitely Colin told me with his eye signal,” accuse me.
“Hei.” Colin raised both his hands in front of his body. “I didn't say anything. He guessed it himself.”
“We'd better go to the bookstore now. I can't be late to pick up my sister from their school.” Hadi glanced at his watch. We agreed immediately.
Hadi and I entered the car, while Colin rode his motorcycle. Then the feeling of unease again disturbed me. How strange. I've never felt this before. The last time I felt this way was waiting for the second DNA test result. Nothing else bothered my mind.
To calm my mind, I called Charlotte. He answered in the second ring. I breathed a sigh of relief hearing her fine voice. Grandma also immediately answered the incoming call from me. They just landed a while ago and are now on their way home.
“What's up?” ask Hadi when I put my phone back in my bag.
“Nothing. There's just an unpleasant feeling that makes me unsettled.” I looked back at the road in front of us.
“You're worried something will happen to your family?” tanyakanya.
“Only those who think in my head. Is there maybe something else that will make me feel uneasy?” For some reason, after knowing my whole family was fine, that sense of unease had not left as well.
“Do you want to go home? I can still turn around now.” Hadi pointed towards the screening spot in front of us. I immediately shook my head.
“No. We've been planning this since last week. I also need some books to add my reference.” I took out my drink bottle and gulped down the contents as we stopped at a crossroads. “Where is Colin?”
“Next to you,” replied Hadi. I turned my head and saw the young man not far from us with the other line of motorcyclists. “Take it easy. Nothing bad will happen. My papa says, they will protect us all from the bad guys.”
The street light turned green, the car in front of us slowly moved forward. Hadi followed them. I touched the bracelet on my left hand. “Ya, you are right.” I looked towards Hadi. “This is just my feeling.”
My eyes caught a suspicious movement from his right. I only had time to shout Hadi's name when a high-speed car pointed straight at us. Is this a sign that makes me feel unsettled?
