Uncle Hendra and Aunt Zahara sat in front of us with different expressions. Uncle with his serious face that made me not dare to raise my head to look at him. Unlike her husband, Aunt tried her best to cover up her happiness. But it failed because his eyes sparkled looking at me and Dira.
Hadi smiled meaningfully from his seat on our left side. Adi looks relaxed with eyes focused on the tablet screen. I don't know what the two of them need to be in this room for either. Don't I just need to talk to their parents?
“So, you decided to go back to her?” ask Uncle to Dira.
My hand in his hand he held tightly. “Iya, Pa.” He raised the right hand where the ring I gave him was. “And I received his proposal too!”
“Why did you accept his proposal before considering it carefully? Are you sure he won't repeat the same mistake?” tanya Uncle challenged his daughter.
“Because I trust him, Pa. I wouldn't go back to him if he couldn't trust me. After all he has promised we will be better at communicating, in all respects,” said Dira trying to convince his father.
“Promise he denies himself.” Uncle Hendra looked at me coldly. I swallowed heavily. “He could have reneged on his promise again.”
“A-I won't renege on my promise again, Uncle. I promise I will take good care of Dira. I'm not gonna be heroic anymore. Every single thing I hear out there I'll clarify with him first. I promise I won't take any more unilateral decisions,” I said at length trying to convince her.
“Already, darling.” Aunt Zahara cut in before Uncle Hendra spoke again. “We both know what lies those two bad guys are telling so we can convince Colin to do what they want. Stop scaring this poor boy.”
“I didn't scare him,” Uncle Hendra said defensively. “I just want the certainty that he won't hurt our daughter again. Especially with cheating, even if it's just a skit.”
Aunt Zahara touched her husband's cheeks, twisted her face so they could look at each other, then kissed her lips. I've always seen Dad and Mama do that, but I'm not comfortable seeing other couples do it. So, I turned my face away.
“Can we talk all right now?” ask Aunt as they end their kiss. “There is still an event that we need to attend and we have to prepare to go.”
Uncle Hendra was disappointed. “After you made me want to take you to the room, you remind me about the event we should attend??”
“Not me who has a big company and has many business partners,” said Aunt Zahara berkelit.
“Good.” Uncle looked at me again. “Tell your parents to come tomorrow, have lunch here with us. I will also invite our parents, as well as Zach and his family to come. I hope you guys don't mind us not having a special celebration of your engagement.”
“That's enough, Pa.” Dira immediately stood up and approached his papa. “Thank you!” Without feeling embarrassed or disinclined, she sat on her papa's lap and hugged him.
I let out a sigh of relief. One of my problems is over. Next, we have a big problem that lies ahead of us. The trial of two bad guys who separated us and made Dira have to live in trauma, which may take a long time to fully recover.
Dad and Mama were happy with the news I brought to them that night. Mama hugged me tightly and reminded half-threatening that I was taking care of Dira better than I did before. Of course I accept it with pleasure.
The lunch of the two families went well the next day. Mama invited Grandpa and Grandma to come with us so that the atmosphere was getting crowded. Grandma also made chrysanthemums and various cakes for us to enjoy together.
“I'll be going to the toilet for a while.” Dira let go of my hand, then stood up from her seat.
I look around me. Everyone looked happy and talked to each other with a smile that could not be separated from their faces. I'm lucky because I'm back with the people I've been with since I was a kid. The same stupidity I won't do again. Because I don't want to lose the support of the people in this room.
“So, you will stay married at the beginning of next year,” said Uncle Zach who sat at the place where Dira was.
“Iya, Uncle,” I replied cheerfully. Seeing her face remain cold, I gulped heavily. This guy loves his niece so much, so I have to be careful when I talk.
“This is your last chance. I hope you remember him well whenever you're going to hurt him again. This time I let you get away. Next time, I'll investigate every single thing you've done in the past until I find something I can use to throw you in jail.” He looked at me expressionlessly. “Do you understand?”
“Me-understand, Uncle,” I replied nervously. The men around Dira were indeed very scary. Not only his father and his father, his two brothers as well. Even though Adi looks relaxed and is still friendly to me, I know that if I make even the slightest mistake with her brother, she will make a calculation with me.
“Good. And I hope you help him not to be daunted when facing trial later.” His facial expression softened. “You're back at the right time. Dira is in need of a lot of love to get through this difficult time.”
We went home after having an afternoon snack together. Grandpa and Grandma were in the car with my family, while I was riding my own motorcycle. Because our car is only enough to fit a maximum of five people.
Dira barely let me go. He did not care about the temptations and the suitans of our family seeing his attitude. After I promised I'd come to see him at home after the college business was over, he let me go home.
Since the end-of-semester exam is over, we don't learn anything new on campus. Some lecturers discuss the exam question, while others repeat chapters that we do not understand well as stated in the answers on our exam sheet.
“I'm sure Hadi gets the highest score again, unlike us who have to learn extra to get the minimum value.” Valeria who was sitting in front of me turned her head as the lecturer left the lecture hall. I'm just smiling. “Are you sure you will graduate in all the courses you took in this semester, Colin?”
“Of course. My answer is suitable and not much different from what the lecturer discussed since last Monday,” I said casually.
“How about you, Hadi?” He looked towards my best friend.
“I don't like to second-guess. Next week we will soon know the answer after the lecturer put up our accumulative value.” Hadi shrugged both of his shoulders.
“You're lucky to have been able to breathe a sigh of relief. I have to prepare because I'm just going to a seminar on Tuesday next week.” Valeria sighed softly.
“You can definitely do it, Valeria.” I smiled, then looked towards Hadi. “We go now?” He nodded his head.
“Where are you going? Can I come with you?” valeria asked expectantly.
“I'll go to Hadi's house, so I can't decide.” I looked towards Hadi. He just walked towards the door, not responding. Valeria pouted looking at him. “I'm sorry. The answer seems to be no. Until tomorrow.”
The poor girl. I don't know what kept him from giving up on approaching Hadi. Yet another girl learned quickly and just observed him from afar. They gave her a gift on her birthday, gave her support at a time when she was entering a competition, but that was it. They hoped Hadi would change his mind through their gifts, and not try to talk or tease him.
Realizing the path we were taking, I turned towards Hadi confusedly. “Why don't we go to the parking lot?” ask her.
“Clarissa will testify tomorrow. I just want to give him support,” he replied.
“You can call or come to his house. Why should you meet him at college?” I'm still confused.
“Because I will only give him support, not invite him to come back to me.” I laughed at his statement. He mocked me coming to his house to talk to his sister.
“When you guys get back together later, I'll laugh at you as much as I do.”
“It won't happen, Cole.” He smiled meaningfully. “Clarissa has no place in my heart or my life. We're really over.”
“The word of a walking person meeting a person who already has no place in his heart to give support,” taunts me.
“I want you to come with me to Papa's office next Tuesday,” he said who changed the topic of our conversation abruptly.
“For what? I'd better meet Dira at your house.”
“You don't know where to work when you finish, ‘ right? I want you to work with me as my assistant. So, you can start to see what Auntie Gista did while on Papa's side. But your duties will be more than a secretary.” He stopped and looked at me. “That's also if you're willing to be my assistant.”
“I don't understand. Why did you suddenly offer this? I have no work experience and being an assistant what do you mean? Why did you ask me to learn from Mama?” my many.
“Because when I replace Papa later, I want you to have experience in your field. Why are you still asking what assistant? Of course assistant director.”
