“What do we do in this place?” many confused.
Colin and Wyatt came to my house without notice. Since they were on Colin's motorcycle, we couldn't go all three. Papa let us go in my car as long as I'm not driving it. Colin happily accepted the task.
They didn't say our goal, just kept humming following the song playing in my car. We stopped once at a convenience store to buy drinks and snacks. Far beyond my expectations, Colin took us to his apartment building straight up to his roof. Our family-owned apartment is also in the building. But we rarely use it.
“Three handsome, intelligent, wealthy, and beautiful young men turned out to be rejected by the girl they loved. Isn't this something that needs to be celebrated?” colin sarkas.
“I'm not rejected because I'm a bad person, so we're not the same. You betrayed the trust of the girl you love, I didn't. Stop equating your fate with mine.” I took out one of the bottles of drinking water that Colin had placed on the table, then finished off half the contents.
There is a mini flower garden on the roof of this building that also provides chairs and tables made of cement. Despite the hot day, the atmosphere around us was cool with plants and there was one tree that shaded our seats.
“You don't need to drip acid in our fresh wounds, Hadi.” Wyatt threw a bag of potato chips at me.
“That's the wrong proverb, Wyatt. Should have sown salt on the wound.” Colin frowned. “You need to change your Indonesian teacher. Charlotte is not a smart teacher.”
“Do you think he's still willing to teach me after we broke up? I don't need a teacher, I can learn on my own. Bahasa Indonesia is not too difficult to learn,” Wyatt said in an arrogant tone.
“By the way, what are you doing at Charlotte's house? You don't have any relationship with him anymore, why would his family allow you to stay there?” colin didn't understand.
“My parents are friends with Granpa Mason and Grandma Claudia. Every time they came to America, Grandpa Ed and Grandma Lindsey also always met them. Do you think they will allow me to stay elsewhere as long as I am in Indonesia?” wyatt said again in a proud tone.
“You're really lucky. I can't even come to Hadi's house anymore at Dira's request. So, I didn't have much of a chance to be able to see him from afar.” Colin sighed loudly to dramatize.
“I don't want to hear you mention my sister's name. Forget Dira and find another girl. You can't get close to him anymore. Remember that.” I gave him a warning by pointing my index finger at him.
“OK. I asked you something. Are you going to resign after Clarissa rejected you last night? You have no intention of persuading him back to you?” colin asked to know.
“No. What use am I to impose my will on the girl who does not love me?” I put a piece of chips in my mouth, then chewed on it, trying to keep myself busy so as not to act pathetic.
“That's because you think Clarissa doesn't love you. But think about it for a moment. What did he say when he ended your relationship? I'm sure he didn't say he didn't feel anything for you. He must have done it because of that slanted news,” Colin said.
“What's the difference?” ask me indifferently.
“Are you blind, Hadi? That girl protected you, your reputation, and your family from her past that could make your name come to ruin. What's he doing that for? He should have just continued your engagement and announced it. He didn't suffer any loss. Instead, people will be afraid to continue their gossip so as not to deal with Uncle Hendra.”
I still don't understand what Colin's trying to say. Clarissa did mention my role as heir in my family, as well as my family's reputation. But what does all this have to do with love?
“He still doesn't understand, Colin.” Wyatt shook his head. “Hadi, Clarissa loves you. That's why he let you go once bad news about him goes around. He does not want you to suffer with him. Moreover, the mention of his actions if not love?”
Of love? Clarissa loves me? No. gabe. That's not possible. He looked at me coldly last night when he said we couldn't be together. That's not how someone looks at someone he loves. Clarissa had no feelings for me more than a friend.
“OK. You don't seem to believe us.” Colin looked at me and Wyatt in turn. “I give you one tip. Never believe all the words that come out of a woman's mouth. They often say no love, when in fact they are love. Or say not angry, but his face was red.
“If that's true, why isn't he being honest?” my question does not understand.
“Because she's a woman.” Colin and Wyatt simultaneously said that sentence. They even rolled their eyeballs to show how ridiculous my question was.
The two of them continued to speak Indonesian which sounded like the language of another planet. I have absolutely no idea what they want to say. Just because they were in a relationship first and in a longer time with a girl, they felt superior to me. Everything they say is just nonsense.
Clarissa doesn't love me. Because if he really loved me, he wouldn't hurt me like this. He would not reject me in front of our family, in front of all our invitations who knew that yesterday was the day that we would announce our engagement.
Colin and Wyatt did not ridicule me, but after I was so proud to call her the girl I loved in front of them all, I was ashamed to meet people who knew our relationship. Not even a month, our engagement is over. I'm a lot more pathetic than Colin and Wyatt.
A knock on the window surprised me. After dinner with my family earlier, I decided to enter the room faster. I'm not like Dira who can pretend to be tough in front of all of us. Every time I see Mama's sad face, I want to hug her and cry. But I'm not a child anymore. I don't want to embarrass myself.
“Hai, Pa,” my handkerchief saw Papa standing in the glass doorway contacting the room and balcony.
“I knocked on the door and called you, but you didn't answer. So, I went in and found you here,” Papa explained. “I don't mean to intrude on your privacy.” I nodded slowly hearing it.
“Sit, Pa.” I patted the sofa so that Papa would sit next to me.
“The wind is cool, it's worth it that you'd rather sit here than be with us in a refrigerated room,” Papa's tease as he sits by my side. I'm just smiling. “You okay?”
“After these few weeks I am very happy to have a fiancee, talk to her anytime I want to hear her voice, meet her or make a video call whenever I want to see her face, and discussed anything as long as I could spend more time with her, then she abruptly ended our relationship. No, Pa. I'm not okay.” I cleared my throat as my voice turned hoarse.
“Give him time, Son. What you've been through the last few weeks is too much for him to bear. You know that all this time he's been living thinking only of himself. Then you were present, he also met his family again, but bad things kept happening. I, as your father, am concerned for your safety. Especially he who cares about you.”
“He cares about me?” I just don't believe it. “Can you all stop using that phrase? He doesn't care about me. I was nobody to him. He doesn't love me either. All he thinks about is himself. All he cares about and cares about is his family. I'm just a friend that she doesn't need anymore after she gets a confession from her family.”
“Hadi, I know you're hurt. But accusing him like this will only further hurt yourself. Stop thinking bad things, son,” said Papa worried. “And what you said is not true. Even though she never said it, Clarissa loves you. He did all this because he wanted to protect you.”
I laugh. “Protect me? Protect me from whom? I can protect myself.”
“Did you forget the incident at the hospital? He who just woke up immediately came to see your situation when Lindsey and Claudia said that you were dying. He loves you. But he has not realized it.” Papa tried to convince me.
“If he doesn't love you, he won't want to spend his time with you, take a video call from you, or even meet you. Your mother used to be like that too. He loved everything I did for him, every time we enjoyed together, and he himself couldn't understand his feelings. Give him time. Believe me, if he is for you, you will come back together with a love that is much stronger than the previous one.”
Papa's last sentence made me realize something very important. I didn't do anything wrong like Colin and Wyatt did. I'm not cheating nor do I lie to Clarissa. They deserve to be kicked out of their relationship. I wasn't.
“After what he did to me, I will not return to him, Pa,” I said firmly. Papa looked at me with round eyes. “He loves me or not, I don't deserve to be treated like this. Like Colin who I would never allow back to my sister, Clarissa also had no second chance with me.”
“Give him time? I've been honoring Mama's promise to Aunt Claudia for the past twenty years by waiting for her to come back. How much longer do I have to wait for one girl? If he can't appreciate my wait and my love for him, then he doesn't deserve a second chance. The time for him is over. And I hope Papa appreciates my decision by not discussing him again.”
