Time seemed to stop and everyone was suddenly silent. No one spoke or moved. My ears to ring due to the loud noise was followed by a quiet atmosphere. My heart was pounding so hard that it was the only sound I could hear.
“My boy!!” It was the first scream that woke us all up. The situation came back boisterous with the cries of those around us calling out different names.
I felt Lily's embrace on my body getting tighter. Mercifully. I held her intertwined hands in front of my chest. Thank goodness he was here with me. Just a few minutes he was late, so he could be the one on the wall near the gate.
“Adi,” muttered slowly. He also attended school here. I didn't notice if he had come out of the school gate or not. “Lily, did you see where Adi is?” I started to panic.
“I didn't notice it. She was still in class when I came out with my friend,” replied my sister who also started to panic. “We'd better find the car first.”
“No. You stay here, let me find him. I can't lose you. Do you understand? Stay here.” Lily nodded her head immediately. I helped him down, then I stood up and turned my head towards him. At that moment I saw his pale face. “Lily, are you okay?” manyworry.
“I-iya. I'm just surprised. I'm doing fine. Go awayl. Please, find Adi.” He encouraged me to leave him. Seeing that he was okay, I said.
The loudest sound of the mothers' cries. They swarmed the car that caused the accident so I could not see clearly. Usually Pak Sakti parked the car in the front row. But I couldn't find the car because of the crowd.
When a man ran with blood on his hands, my stomach churned. Ukh, I can't stand the sight of blood in large quantities. I almost retreated but I had to find Adi. So, I braced myself walking through the crowd and found the person I was looking for. He was not far from the crowd. I immediately ran to him.
“Adi! Are you okay?” I almost vomited looking at the blood on his hands and the front of his uniform. “You're bleeding. We better get to the hospital now.”
“Ti-no. I-this is not my blood.” Adi just stood up with a trembling body. I immediately grabbed him. “Mo-the car almost hit me. I-I'm a little late, I'm the one under the car i-it.” His gaze was fixed on the floor under the car.
Oh, dearGod. I don't know how many people there are, but the pavement has started to be moistened with that red viscous liquid. I couldn't stand it anymore so my legs were squeezing. But before I lost my balance, I felt someone embrace my body.
“Master, you okay?” Sounded Pak Sakti's voice. He took me away from that place. My hand was placed on a hood of the car so I could bow my head. “Take a deep breath and try to calm yourself, Sir. I'll check on Mr. Adi.”
The man left me and I did what he suggested. I took a deep breath as I could. Since I was already far away from the crowd, I could breathe with relief and the nausea did not bother me anymore. Pak Sakti came back with a bottle of drink in his hand.
“Minum, Mr.” I immediately received the drink. “Do you want to come to the hospital? I need to take Mr. Adi there now.”
I shook my head. “I'll be following along with my sister. Go.” I returned the bottle to him. He immediately got away and went to the car that just stopped next to the car where I was leaning. Looks like he just arrived.
The situation around me is very chaotic. The traffic stopped with many curious people to see what was happening near the school gate. Pak Sakti must have had a hard time getting through all those rows of cars. Oh, aye. Hospitals. I have to follow them there.
To avoid the crowd and see the blood that might have filled the pavement around the wrecked car, I walked between the neatly lined cars and the halted traffic. I avoided that sidewalk. There were already some people carrying cameras with news media labels that filled the place. We have to hurry away.
Lily was still at the place where she I left off. He hugged me when we were close. I returned grateful that he was near me when the car sped in front of us. I asked him to ride a motorcycle. After I got better, I drove it across the traffic jam. Some far from the front of the school gate, the atmosphere of the road was quite quiet.
The phone in my pocket shook, but I ignored it. I need to get to the hospital quickly. Arriving at the destination, I have not been able to calm down before meeting Adi and Pak Sakti. Lily followed me with her hands tightly clasping my hands.
We checked one by one the rooms whose curtains were closed until we found the room where Adi and Pak Sakti were. The young man was honest. He was unharmed, only shaken by what he had witnessed earlier. I don't know how her uniform got those red stains, either. But I refrained from asking. Adi needs calm.
“Don't you know how worried I am about your circumstances!? Why didn't you answer my call from earlier??” I screamed Mama in a panic. “I read the news on the internet. What the hell's going on? Are you and your sister okay??”
“We're fine, Ma. I'm sorry, I was on my way to the hospital.”
“If you and Lily are okay. Why are you guys in the hospital?” ask Mama confused. “Do you guys go there with Adi?”
“Iya, Mother. He was also unharmed, only shaken because the accident happened right in front of his eyes.” As soon as I said that, I could already imagine what Adi was feeling. Seeing those students getting hit in front of his eyes, he must have imagined it could be him who was in their position. Because I feel that too. We are both lucky and guilty to have survived the catastrophe.
Uncle Hendra and Mama arrived a few minutes later. My mother's boss immediately asked the medics what happened to her son. Mama hugged me and Lily, then nonstop kissing our faces. My sister who had been holding back her emotions, ended up crying.
The atmosphere of the room was getting crowded, Dad who came then took us to a quiet place. I was finally able to sit quietly and step away for a moment from the place with the pungent smell of medicine. Since the location of this hospital included being close to the school, some accident victims were brought into the room as well. So, I don't want to be there much longer.
Seeing that condition, Uncle brought Adi home so that he could rest in peace. Dad didn't allow me to ride my motorcycle until the four of us got home in his car. I chose to close my eyes and lean my head against the car seat all the way to the apartment. It helps to cast off the bad shadow of the incident earlier.
Lily and I cleaned up and changed clothes before joining our parents in the living room. Dad was forced to leave school for us, and so was Mama. Uncle allowed him to come home early. Dad and Mama asked us to sit between them. I gave up and let my emotions take over.
It was playing clearly in my head. Just one second was the decisive moment for my life and my brother. If Lily hadn't asked me for help wearing her helmet, I might have driven a motorcycle and we'd have been hit by that car. Just one second, Lily and I were lying on the sidewalk covered in blood.
“I know I'm evil, but I'm so grateful it wasn't you guys who got in an accident.” Mom kissed us in turn. “Oh, God, thank you. My kids survived.” We cried together, because we could get together again and no one was hurt.
Hearing the doorbell, Dad stood up and walked towards the door. All that can enter the elevator in the residential part is the owner of the apartment and security officers. So, we need not fear that there will be intruders entering our residences.
A savory scent entered my smell as Dad walked over to us. I know this smell. I looked back and saw the two large pockets that Dad was holding. She and Mama laughed. Waw. They ordered fast food!
Dad hasn't put that bag on the table, me and Lily are fighting over it. We picked up our favorite burgers and scrambled to find sauce and chili sauce sassets to add flavor. No food can take our minds off like this.
“You guys don't be happy first. Tonight is an exception. But from tomorrow, you should eat a healthy meal until the weekend,” Mama said firmly.
“Yeah, really, so, Ma?” lily protest.
“The weekend is the day to order our favorite food. Time because today has eaten, so the weekend can no longer?” I protested too.
“I've ordered this much food, you guys still want to eat it also on the weekend??” my mother said she did not believe.
The doorbell rings again. Lily and I exchanged looks. Dad laughed at our behavior. “No more food we ordered. There may be a package they forgot to deliver. Let me open it,” said Dad who stood up and walked towards the door.
We continued our meal. Lily got what she expected. Mama ordered two servings of her favorite burger. I didn't know we were this hungry. I was just about to bite my burger when someone hugged me from behind.
