“Clarissa, you stay still and don't move,” I said seeing that the snake had already decided who it would be near between the two of us. “That switch won't peck you if you're silent.”
Instead of panicking, the girl smiled. He took out a large serving hood on a nearby table and covered the snake with the object. I held my breath seeing his recklessness, or better if I say, his courage. Who is this woman? How could he not be afraid at all of that spoon snake?
The waiter who saw the incident immediately approached Clarissa and took over the hood. “Thank you, Miss. At this time there are often snakes that appear in the yard. We will secure it now.”
“Good, Sir.” Clarissa backed off, letting the man do his job. I still look at him in disbelief. “Come, Hadi. Let this gaffer do his job.”
We took a few steps back. A colleague came carrying a small sack and the man put the snake he had held tightly to the head and mouth of the sack. They immediately went to take the snake out of nowhere.
“What you did was very dangerous, Clarissa. The snake could have pecked at you,” I said no matter if I sounded worried.
“I'm fine, ‘kan?” said relax. “I've been used to meeting snakes for as long as I was a kid, Hadi. I know how to deal with them.”
I chose to be quiet and not continue our conversation. If anyone hears, they can misunderstand me and think that I intend to go back to this girl. So, I chose to sit in one of the chairs and wait for our family to join us.
Aunt Daphina was very moved by the event we had prepared. We celebrated her wedding anniversary, then Wyatt played guitar and Charlotte sang to cheer us all up with her sweet voice. We sat around the campfire as they sang a love song that made me uncomfortable. But I can't protest, because it's a wedding, it's only natural that the song dominates the theme of love.
On Saturdays, we are free to do our own activities. Of course the women agreed to go to the beach, then to the art market to shop. What a boring thing. Since staying in the room was even more boring, I went with them.
I swam on the beach and ignored the couples who were in a drunk romance around me. Shopping at the market is also relaxing. The women are busy choosing the things that catch their attention, we the men just follow where they go.
“Stop putting on that annoying face,” said Papa who walked by my side. “You can't be elegant in front of a woman who has rejected you? Show him that he didn't manage to hurt you.”
“I don't put on an irritating face,” my cheapskate defends himself.
He pointed to the mirror near us. “See for yourself, if you don't believe.” I didn't want to do it, because I knew Papa wouldn't lie. “I once made the mistake of waiting for five years to get back to your mother. Do not repeat the same mistake by acting like this.”
“I don't want to talk about this.”
“ Denying feelings will only make yourself difficult, son. I didn't mean to be evil. Just trying to prevent you from making the same mistake.” Papa patted my shoulder. “Clarissa good girl. Your mom likes him, so what are you waiting for? Forgive what he has done and start a new beginning.”
Saying it is not as easy as doing it. What's my face like that, huh? Why is everyone telling me to go back to Clarissa? It seems like they all care more about him than I do. They've known me for a long time, but Clarissa has the support of everyone. This is not fair.
I saw Mama put a dress in front of Clarissa's body and laughed happily with Aunt Lindsey. Even my own mother betrayed her son. What is so special about Clarissa that they all want us back together?
That girl doesn't need a man. Don't they all know that? He could protect himself from the onslaught of criminals, could cope with the venomous beasts that tried to approach him, he even paid all the money that his adoptive parents used to raise him.
“Yes, geez, Sister. Stop putting that face on. Smile. Holidays are good, we will return to Jakarta. Sister does not need to meet with Clarissa for the next few days.” Adi smiled meaningfully. “Come, we go to the lobby now.”
We ran into two lovebirds who were drunk in romance in front of the elevator. As I was worried, Clarissa followed later with Lily. I had to go with them to the elevator. The two couples were purposely flirting in front of me. I am not jealous of their closeness. Dating's not in my dictionary for the next five years.
A waiter greeted us in the lobby and asked us to leave our luggage to him. Then he invited us to lunch first in the dining room. Aunt Daphina and Om Brady were waiting for us there.
We are welcome to take our own food. They don't have to ask twice. We headed to the table and filled our plates. Since the parents haven't arrived yet, I can sit in a safe seat, away from Clarissa. The food I ate was more enjoyable than usual.
“Anything I will do as long as your wedding anniversary is more memorable.” Aunt Darla hugged and kissed her daughter.
After saying goodbye, we all entered a mini bus that would take us to the airport. I breathe a sigh of relief. Eventually, we will return to our home and daily activities. I need to find enough material to complete my script. So, as soon as the lecture re-started, I was able to discuss with my supervising lecturer.
“Wah, whew. Who for a few days was pouting and had an irritating face, finally smiling back,” Papa's tease. I just glanced for a moment at him.
“That's a natural thing, Pa. I was in his position.” Dira looked at Colin who was sitting by his side. “But that time has passed and I am happy to be with my dear again.”
“You all seem to emulate your papa's harsh nature. He was so first too.” Mama mocked Papa who just laughed hearing that.
“Did you forget that you are no less harsh with me either? Hm?” Papa pressed the tip of Mama's nose. We groaned at their affection.
We arrived at Soekarno-Hatta airport in the afternoon. I thought we were going to the exit to get into the car. The parents invited us to eat first. Things I won't refuse, because the journey home will take almost two hours.
Everyone seemed happy despite the exhausting journey. Tired after swimming in the sea and shopping at the art market began to feel in my body. I'm sure the parents are more tired.
“Ah, they've landed!” aunt Lindsey told us all. I frowned not understanding who he was talking about.
“Ciiee, Clarissa will soon meet her new fans.” Charlotte blinked one eye at her sister. Ooo. That's why we all eat here. They waited until Aunt Claudia and her entourage arrived.
“Are you guys going on vacation when they go to Bali later?” ask Aunt Darla to Aunt Lindsey.
“No.” Aunt Lindsey exchanged looks with her husband. “Edu is unlikely to leave his efforts for too long. He still has responsibilities until Clarissa or Charlotte are ready to take our family business.”
“Don't worry, Grandpa. I'll graduate before this year's over. So, Grandpa can already get ready to retire,” Clarissa said consoling him.
“I can't wait to leave my office for good and be alone with my wife all day at home.” Om Edu embraces Aunt Lindsey and they laugh together.
After getting word that Aunt Claudia was heading to the baggage claim, we got up and got out of the restaurant. We walked towards the exit gate of international arrival. I saw Clarissa sighed softly several times while looking at her shoes. He seemed unenthusiastic about his grandmother's arrival this time. He was usually happy to welcome his grandparents' visit.
“Ah, that's them!” fun Aunt Lindsey. “Claudia! Mason!” He waved his hand towards those who immediately turned their heads and laughed happily.
Aunt Claudia and Uncle Mason quickened their pace. There were three foreign-faced people who were also American nationals walking behind them. I guessed that the young man was the one who was mentioned by Wyatt and Clarissa.
“Clarissa is so lucky! Luca is even more handsome in real life than his picture!” peekik Charlotte's stuck. I ignored her happy cheers.
“Hai, all!” greet Aunt Claudia happy. “Why do you all welcome our arrival? I asked Lindsey to go straight home. We can come ourselves to their home.”
“What's the thrill of just waiting for you to come alone? We waited while dinner, so it didn't feel long.” Aunt Lindsey and Aunt Claudia hugged each other.
As everyone took turns welcoming and hugging Aunt Claudia and Uncle Mason, a young man approached Clarissa and ignored the others. He extended his hand to the girl whom he greeted reluctantly. What happened to Clarissa? He was dealing with a young man who made his own sister jealous. Does he not like that handsome guy? Moreover, they look compatible with the physical appearance of both caucasoid.
That's what's on my mind. But my body thinks differently. My feet stepped closer to Clarissa, my hands were embracing her body, then my mouth said, “You can already let go of my lover's hand. You know that holding someone else's property for too long is very disrespectful, ‘kan?”
