“I love you, Dira,” I said hearing him challenge me. Does he think I'm trying to frame him? I asked not because I didn't know, but because I couldn't believe he was telling everyone about our problem, and not me.
“Are you mocking me? You say love in such a cold tone. Do you think I'm being childish? No romance would have worked without love, Colin,” he said seriously.
“That conclusion you got from where? How can you judge I don't love you?” I walked closer to him. He stood straight with his chin raised.
“You have found the answer, then you definitely know what made me draw that conclusion.” He was still acting tough, covering up who he really was. Does he think I can't see he's nervous? His breathing was slightly faster than normal, he repeatedly bit his lips, and gulped heavily.
“We've been together since childhood, can you show me a couple that lasted as long as the two of us? What's the name if it's not love that keeps me going? I exist every time you need me, is that not love? I support every big decision in your life, is that not love?”
When we got so close, I grabbed her arm and pulled her closer. “What I should ...” I brought our faces closer. His rounded eyes immediately closed and he took a surprised breath. But I stopped when our lips almost touched. “Kissing your lips for you to believe? Hugged you so tightly that you were sure?” I hugged him and whispered in his ear. “Taking you to make love in bed until we are both exhausted to show that I really love you?”
He pushed my body by putting both of his hands in front of my chest, but I did not move in the slightest. “Let me go, Colin. You scared me.”
“Why does this scare you? Didn't you see your parents kissing, hugging, and you must know what they were doing in the room when they were alone?” I loosened my arms, and she immediately retreated away. “Isn't that the love you mean that we don't have? Or am I wrong again?”
He crossed his hands in front of his chest and raised his chin. “You are wrong.”
“Good. In that case, tell me which one is right,” I said, trying to follow his will.
“I just want to hear you say love. That'sallthatis. You don't have to touch me like that. We have agreed that we will not cross the line until we get married later,” he said reminding me.
“Oke.” I nodded in agreement. “So, what's your response?”
“My response to what?” tanyakanya.
I volunteered to hear that question. “You won't make me wonder if you feel the same way too, ‘kan?”
“Oh. You mean your love statement?” ask her with a naive tone. “Thank you?”
“Good. I think I've done the right thing by coming here, trying to mend our relationship. But I was wrong. You don't take me seriously.” My patience ran out, so I walked over to the door.
“What response do you expect after you declare love? I love you, so?” said Dira as I walked past him. “Iya, Colin. I love you.”
I stopped my steps. My chest feels tight because of happiness. I turned around and saw her smiling happily. I'm sure my face is the same expression. “I know that! Does that mean we're back together again?”
“You just said love and I responded. No talk about us getting back together again.” He pretended to be innocent again.
“Alright, then.” I turned my back and opened the door.
Dira took a surprised breath. “Colin? Where are you going?” I did not care about it and continued walking towards the front door. “Colin, we're not done talking. Colin!”
I rushed down the terrace as soon as I got outside her house, got on my motorcycle, and left the house. The first place I went was the apartment. I passed Lily who was engrossed in her laptop. Dad and Mama must have gone to attend an event at a hotel.
After picking up a box from my nightstand drawer in the bedroom, I intended to get out of the apartment. But I remembered my conversation with Hadi, so I went back and approached my sister. I signal him to turn down the volume of his laptop.
“What's up? Don't dawdle. Adi is teaching me to play the game.” He looked at me with annoyance. I was surprised to hear that word. “What's up? Are you the only one who can play the game?”
“OK. I don't want to discuss that.” I immediately cut out the sentence. “I want to know one thing. What do you think of me and Clarissa?”
“You're approaching?” he said with doubt.
I open my mouth. “Why did you draw that conclusion?” Hadi's right. My sister thinks so too. Did Charlotte and Wyatt think so?
“I and Clarissa are just friends,” I said firmly.
“OK, if you say so,” he said casually. “Can I continue my conversation with Adi?” He looked at me flatly.
“Alright, fine. See you later.” I let him continue his activities and walked out of our residence.
The next place I went to was the flower shop. I bought some red roses and asked the waiter to make a beautiful bouquet. Then I stopped by a bakery selling their signature chocolate balls.
When I returned to that house, Mr. Abdi looked at me with a worried face. He reported that Dira was very angry and I needed to be careful. I almost laughed when I heard it. Anger is not what I fear most, but Uncle Hendra is angry.
Mr. Abdi opened the door for me. I went in and saw Dira sitting on one of the sofas with a dead red face. He closed his lips and his hands crossed in front of his chest. He did not look at me at all, so I approached him. I put the bouquet of flowers on her lap with the food bag from the bakery.
“This is for me?” His eyes were happily round. After the last few weeks I teased her by paying attention to her mother, bringing her favorite bouquet of flowers to Aunt Zahara, I knew she would be happy to receive all of this. And only for her, not her mother.
“Iya. This is for you.” I knelt in front of him.
“Ah, no. Don't sit there. Sit here.” He patted the empty spot by his side.
I shook my head slowly, then took out the box I took from my room earlier. “I've been delaying this for four months, so I won't wait any more.”
“Colin? That's ...” He looked at me and the box couldn't believe it. When her eyes watered, I knew that she understood what was inside the box I was carrying.
“I know what it's like to live without you and I don't like it. So, if you still want to give me another chance, will you be with me not only for a few years, but until we die?” askaku expectantly.
“You mean, we stay married next year?” tanyanya.
“Just on your birthday.” We've been planning this for a long time, so I want us to stick to our original plan.
Her happy face immediately turned sad. “Are you sure you want to do this? I'm not the old Dira anymore. I will greatly trouble you with a new enemy within me.” He lowered his head. “What you see at the moment doesn't always happen. I wasn't always this calm. I still often hide, cry alone, or lose confidence.”
“I don't care.” I cut it off immediately before he added. “You are still Dira. I also have a new enemy. We can face it together. You and I don't have to fight it alone anymore. Give me one last chance. I won't disappoint you again.”
“What is it like to live without fighting with you again?” tanyanya disappointed.
“Can you stop doing this and just answer my question?” I'm getting impatient. “Kneeling too long like this makes my legs numb.”
“You are indeed no romantic at all.” She's pouting. “Apply while getting angry. I've asked you to sit here, you yourself are willing to kneel.” He took out the ring that was inside the box, then attached it to his finger. “You satisfied now?”
I smiled happily, then sat by her side while clasping her hands. “I'll ask Dad to meet Uncle soon. I don't want a regular wedding. Since it's our only marriage, I want you to be happy and everything goes like your dream.”
“Colin,” says Dira cut my speech. “I just want a simple wedding. I'm no longer a kid who believes in cartoons about princesses. Even if you and I have savings now, we have to think about our future. I don't know when I'm still working as a model. You also do not want to rely on your hobby, ‘kan? So, better money for the cost of a luxurious wedding that we save it.”
“Hey, hey, briefly.” The door of the room opened and Hadi entered with a dislike face. “What is this you guys discussing marriage?” He looked towards our interlocked hands.
“We've made up and we'll get married early next year, sister!” cheer Dira.
Hadi pulled out his phone. “Papa warned me about this. You can't decide anything before talking to them.”
I gulped heavily hearing that. Just a few minutes happy to be back with Dira, I had to deal with my father-in-law's frightening future.
